Instagram Automation Glossary: Terms in Plain English
A plain-English glossary of Instagram automation terms: trigger, keyword, private reply, 24-hour window, follow gate, lead capture, API, webhook and more.
Read any page about Instagram automation and you'll hit a pile of jargon: triggers, private replies, webhooks, follow gates. None of it is complicated, but it's rarely explained in plain words. This glossary covers the terms an Indian business owner or creator actually needs, grouped by topic so related words sit together.
The basics
Instagram automation
Software that sends replies on Instagram for you — answering comments, DMs and story replies automatically, based on rules you set.
DM (direct message)
A private message on Instagram, seen only by you and the other person (or group).
Professional account
A Business or Creator account. Required for automation through the official API. See Business vs Creator.
API (Application Programming Interface)
The official doorway Instagram (Meta) provides so approved software can read comments and send messages for your account. “Official API” means the tool uses this doorway instead of logging in as you and clicking buttons.
OAuth / “Login with Instagram”
The screen where you approve a tool's access on Instagram's own page. You never give the tool your password.
Permissions
The specific things you allow a tool to do — for example, manage messages and manage comments. You can remove a tool's access later from your Instagram settings.
Triggers and matching
Trigger
The event that starts an automation: a comment, a DM, a story reply, a button tap.
Keyword
A word that must appear for the trigger to fire — “price”, “link”, “details”.
Any-comment trigger
The automation answers every comment, whatever it says.
Smart Matching
JaldiDM's name for matching word forms and keywords inside sentences, so “prices?” and “what is the price of this” both match “price”.
Scope (post-specific vs all posts)
Whether an automation listens on one post or reel, or on every post. When both exist, a well-designed tool lets the more specific one answer so nobody gets two DMs.
Instagram's messaging rules
Private reply
A DM a business sends to someone because they commented on its post. One per comment, within 7 days. The foundation of comment-to-DM. Full explainer: private replies.
24-hour messaging window
After someone messages you, your business can send free-form messages through the API for 24 hours. Each new message from them resets it. See the 24-hour rule.
Message requests
The folder where messages from people you don't have a connection with usually land. Your DMs can land in other people's Requests too.
Primary and General
Two tabs that professional accounts use to sort their inbox.
Cold DM
Messaging someone who never contacted you. Official automation tools don't do this — and you shouldn't either.
Parts of an automation
Public reply
The reply posted under someone's comment, visible to everyone — “Sent you a DM 📩”.
Comment-to-DM
A comment triggers a public reply plus a private DM. The most popular automation for reels. See comment-to-DM automation.
Flow
A series of messages connected by buttons or replies — message one, tap, message two.
Button
A tappable option inside a DM that sends the person to the next message or opens a link.
Product card
A DM block showing a product with image, title and a button.
Follow gate (follow-before-link)
A step that asks the person to follow your account before you send the link or freebie. Useful for giveaways; annoying on simple price questions.
Lead capture
Asking for contact details — usually a phone number — inside the DM. In JaldiDM the number is saved alongside the person's Instagram username in your Leads list.
Story reply automation
An automatic DM response when someone replies to your story.
Welcome / first-DM automation
A reply sent when someone messages your account for the first time.
Repeat rule
How often a DM automation answers the same person: first message only, once per 24 hours, once, or always.
Running and measuring
Shared inbox
One place where your team sees comments, public replies and DMs together, so whoever picks up a chat knows what was already said.
Human handover
The moment a person takes over from the automation — for complaints, refunds, negotiations or anything the bot shouldn't answer.
Click tracking
Counting how many people tapped a link you sent in a DM. JaldiDM calls this Track Your Links.
CTR (click-through rate)
Clicks divided by messages sent. A quick way to compare which DM wording works better.
AI replies
Replies written by AI from your own FAQs, for questions that don't match a keyword. Useful, but only as good as the FAQs you provide.
Webhook
The technical message Instagram sends to a tool the instant something happens (“new comment on post X”). It's why automated replies can go out within seconds.
Token
A digital key that lets the tool act for your account. If it expires or you change certain settings, you may need to reconnect.
