How to Measure Instagram DM Conversions, Comment to Sale
What to measure from comments to DMs, clicks, leads and sales, where each number comes from, and a simple Google Sheet to track your Instagram DM funnel.
Plenty of businesses run comment-to-DM campaigns and judge them by feel: “the reel got a lot of comments, so it worked”. Then the month ends and the sales don't match the excitement. The fix isn't a fancy dashboard. It's knowing which five numbers to look at and writing them down every week. This guide shows you what to measure from comment to sale, where each number comes from, and how to keep it all in one simple sheet.
The five stages of an Instagram DM sale
Every DM-driven sale passes through the same funnel. Name the stages first:
- Comments — people who commented on the post or reel (ideally with your keyword).
- DMs sent — people who actually received your automated or manual DM.
- Clicks — people who tapped the link or button in that DM.
- Leads — people who left a phone number, booked a call or asked a buying question.
- Sales — people who paid.
The value is in the drop between each step. If lots of people comment but few receive a DM, something is wrong with your automation or keyword. If lots receive the DM but few click, the message is weak. If lots click but few buy, the problem is on your website or in your price — not on Instagram.
Where each number comes from
Comments
Instagram's own insights show comments per post. If you use keyword triggers, count only the comments that matched — those are the people who asked for something. JaldiDM's Analytics dashboard shows activity across your account.
DMs sent
Your automation tool should tell you how many DMs went out. If this number is much lower than your keyword comments, check our troubleshooting guide — common causes are a keyword spelled differently from what people type, or an automation attached to the wrong post.
Clicks
Don't send bare links you can't measure. Use a tracked link. JaldiDM's Track Your Links feature counts clicks on links sent in DMs. If your site uses Google Analytics, add UTM tags too (for example utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=diwali-hamper) so the visits show up separately from your bio link traffic.
Leads
If your DM asks for a phone number, every number shared is saved with the person's Instagram username in your Leads list. That's your lead count. If you sell by WhatsApp or phone instead, a lead might be “sent a WhatsApp message” — just decide the definition and stick to it.
Sales
This is the hardest number, because the sale often happens off Instagram — on your website, on WhatsApp, or at the counter in your shop. Three practical ways to connect it back:
- A discount code that appears only in the DM (“use REEL10”).
- UTM-tagged links so your website shows which orders came from DM visits.
- Asking at checkout or on the call: “Where did you hear about us?” Not perfect, but better than nothing.
The one-sheet tracker
Open Google Sheets and make one row per campaign (usually one reel or one offer). Columns:
- Date posted
- Reel or post (a short name, e.g. “Rakhi box reel”)
- Keyword
- Keyword comments
- DMs sent
- Link clicks
- Leads (numbers or enquiries)
- Sales
- Revenue in ₹
- Notes (what you changed, what people asked)
Then add three simple formula columns: clicks ÷ DMs sent, leads ÷ clicks, and sales ÷ leads. These ratios tell you which stage is leaking. Fill it in once a week — fifteen minutes on a Monday morning is enough.
Why we won't give you a “good” number
You'll find blogs quoting average click rates for Instagram DMs. Treat them with suspicion. A ₹300 earring and a ₹30 lakh flat have completely different funnels. A reel shown to your loyal followers behaves differently from one that went viral to strangers in another state. The only benchmark that matters is your own last month. Aim to improve your own ratios, one stage at a time.
Reading the sheet: what to fix first
- Few comments: your call to action isn't clear. See how to earn more comments on reels.
- Comments high, DMs low: keyword mismatch or setup issue. Add variations like “price”, “rate”, “kitne ka”.
- DMs high, clicks low: the message is too long, the button label is vague, or the follow-before-link step is losing people. Test one change at a time.
- Clicks high, leads or sales low: look at the page they land on. Does it show the exact product from the reel? Is the price a surprise? Is checkout slow on mobile?
- Leads high, sales low: your follow-up is slow. A lead who shared their number on Saturday night and got a call on Tuesday has often already bought elsewhere.
Test one thing at a time
If you change the keyword, the DM wording and the landing page in the same week, you won't know which one helped. Change one thing, run it for a week or two, and note it in the Notes column. Small tests like “button says See price vs Shop now” are easy to run and easy to read.
What not to measure
Follower count and views are useful for reach, but they don't belong in this sheet. A reel with fewer views and more sales is the better reel. Keep the sheet about the path to money.
