"Price in DM" on Instagram: Does It Hurt or Help Sales?
The price-in-DM debate, honestly: when hiding the price kills trust, when sending it by DM works, and better patterns that keep both buyers and sellers happy.
“Price in DM” might be the most argued-about phrase on Indian Instagram. Shoppers hate it — scroll any fashion reel and you'll find comments like “why can't you just write the price?” and “PID means expensive”. Sellers defend it: it starts a conversation, competitors can't copy your rates, and prices change.
Both sides have a point. This post separates the situations where hiding the price hurts you from the ones where sending it by DM genuinely works — and offers a few patterns that get the benefits of both.
Why shoppers distrust “price in DM”
- It feels like a trap. People suspect the price changes depending on who asks, or that it's high and you're hiding it.
- It costs effort. To compare five sellers, they have to message five accounts and wait for five replies.
- The replies are slow. “DM for price” followed by a reply eight hours later is the worst of both worlds. Most people have already bought elsewhere.
- They fear the follow-up. Once they DM, will you message them forever?
Why sellers keep doing it
- A DM is a conversation. You can answer questions, suggest a size, and close the sale — a caption can't.
- Competitors watch. Small sellers in crowded categories worry about being undercut.
- Prices really vary. Custom work, services, wholesale and property don't have one number.
- DMs can boost reach. Comments asking for the price add engagement on the post.
When hiding the price hurts
Be open about price when:
- Your product has a fixed price. A ₹699 T-shirt doesn't need a conversation.
- You sell impulse buys under a couple of thousand rupees. Friction kills impulse.
- You can't reply quickly. If DMs wait hours, “price in DM” just loses sales.
- Your audience is comparing. Festive shopping, gifts, anything where people check three shops before buying.
When price in DM genuinely works
- Custom or quoted work: interiors, catering, event décor, wedding photography. “It depends” is honest — but say so, and share a starting range.
- High-ticket items: property, courses, jewellery, where the buyer needs a conversation anyway.
- Variants with very different prices: a lehenga that comes in three fabrics.
- When the DM arrives instantly. This is the big one. If someone comments “price” and has the price in their DM within seconds, most of the frustration disappears. The problem was never the DM — it was the wait.
Better patterns than plain “price in DM”
Pattern 1: Price in caption, details in DM
₹1,499 · Pure cotton · Sizes S–XXL
Comment SIZE and I'll DM you the size chart + order link 📩
The price builds trust; the DM still starts a conversation, because you're offering something extra. This is the pattern most shoppers prefer.
Pattern 2: “Starts at” + DM for exact quote
Modular kitchens from ₹1.8L (8×10 ft, laminate finish).
Comment QUOTE for a price for your size and finish.
Perfect for services and custom work. It filters out people who were never in your budget range.
Pattern 3: Instant price in DM, clearly promised
Comment PRICE — the price lands in your DM in seconds, no waiting 🙌
If you prefer keeping price out of the caption, at least make the reply instant and say so. That's exactly what comment-to-DM automation does: public reply under the comment, price in the DM, any time of day.
Pattern 4: Price list in a Highlight
For menus, salon services and class fees, a “Prices” story highlight answers most questions before they're asked. Then use DMs for bookings, not for quoting.
Writing the price DM
Whatever pattern you pick, the DM itself should be a proper answer, not another hoop:
Hi! Here's the price 👇
Chikankari kurta — ₹1,850 · Free shipping · Delivery 4–6 days
[Order now] [Size chart] [More colours]
Namaste! Ye kurta ₹1,850 ka hai, shipping free 🚚 Order karna ho toh neeche button dabaiye.
Things to avoid in the price DM:
- “Please share your number to know the price.” Gating the price behind a phone number reads as a trick.
- “Follow us to see the price.” Same problem. Save follow-before-link for free guides — see when follow-to-get-link makes sense.
- Different prices for different people for the same item. Someone will compare screenshots.
Catching every way people ask
Indian commenters ask for price in many ways: “price?”, “pp”, “rate”, “kitne ka hai”, “how much”, “cost pls”. Add the common ones as keywords on the same automation. JaldiDM's Smart Matching handles word forms and keywords inside sentences (“what is the price of this” matches “price”), but add the Hinglish and shorthand versions you actually see. Keyword setup is covered in Instagram keyword trigger automation.
When price talk needs a human
Instant price answers are perfect for automation. Negotiation isn't. When someone replies “best price?”, “bulk mein kitna?” or “any discount?”, a person should respond from the inbox. Same for custom quotes — the automation can collect the details, but a human should send the final number. Scripts for that part of the conversation are in our DM sales script.
The honest verdict
If your price is fixed and modest, put it in the caption. If it genuinely varies, show a starting price and quote in DM. And if you do send prices by DM, make it instant. JaldiDM's 7-day free trial (no card) lets you test instant price replies on your own reels. Try it free.
