How to Switch to an Instagram Professional Account
Step-by-step guide to switch your Instagram to a professional account, what changes after, and why DM automation needs a professional account.
You've decided to automate your Instagram DMs, you open an automation tool, click “Connect Instagram” — and it says your account isn't supported. Very often the fix takes a couple of minutes: your account is still a personal account, and it needs to be a professional one.
This guide walks you through the switch, explains what changes, and covers the few things worth checking afterwards.
Why automation needs a professional account
Legitimate DM automation tools use Instagram's official API — the approved way for software to read comments and send messages on your behalf. Instagram only opens that API to professional accounts. Personal accounts simply can't be connected.
If a tool says it can automate a personal account, it is almost certainly asking for your password and running a bot. That's against Instagram's terms and puts your account at risk. Our safety guide explains the difference.
Before you start
- Decide Business or Creator. Both work for automation. If you're unsure, read Business vs Creator account first — you can change later, so don't overthink it.
- Think about privacy. Professional accounts are public. If your account is private now, it will become public when you switch.
- Have your contact details ready. Business email, phone and address (if you want them on your profile) — all optional.
Step by step: switching in the Instagram app
Instagram renames and moves menu items fairly often, so the exact labels on your phone may be a little different. If you can't find an option, search for “professional account” in Instagram's Help Centre for the current path.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile (tap your photo, bottom right).
- Tap the menu (three lines, top right) to open Settings and activity.
- Look for Account type and tools (in some versions it sits under “For professionals” or inside “Account”).
- Tap Switch to professional account.
- Go through the short intro screens and tap Continue.
- Choose a category that describes you — “Clothing store”, “Coach”, “Real estate agent”, “Bakery”. You can choose whether to show it on your profile.
- Pick Business or Creator.
- Review or add contact options. You can skip this and fill it in later from Edit profile.
- Instagram may offer to connect a Facebook Page. That's optional, and JaldiDM doesn't need it — you can skip it.
- Tap Done. Your profile now has a professional dashboard.
What changes after you switch
- You get insights. Reach, profile visits and follower activity for your posts — but generally only for content posted after the switch.
- Your inbox splits into Primary and General. Plus the Requests folder for new people. See message requests explained.
- You can add contact buttons and a category label to your profile.
- Your account is public. Anyone can see your posts and follow without approval.
- Your posts and followers stay as they are. Nothing is deleted.
Connecting automation after the switch
With a professional account, connecting a tool on the official API looks like this:
- Sign up for the tool and click Connect Instagram.
- You're taken to Instagram's own login and permission screen — not a form on the tool's site.
- Review the permissions (things like managing messages and comments) and approve.
- You're sent back to the tool with your account connected.
Then build a small first automation and test it. For example, on one reel: when someone comments “price”, reply publicly with “DM check karo 📩” and send a DM with the price and an order button. The full walkthrough is in how to set up Instagram DM automation.
Checks if something isn't working
“Account not eligible” or no account appears
Make sure the switch finished — your profile should show a professional dashboard. Close and reopen the app, then try connecting again. Also check you're logging in to the right Instagram account if you have several.
Messages aren't going out
In Instagram's message settings there is an option that controls whether connected tools can access your messages. The exact name has changed over time; look under message or privacy settings for something about connected tools or message access, and make sure it's on. Instagram's Help Centre has the current wording.
It worked, then stopped
If you changed your password, switched account type, or removed the tool's access, Instagram may disconnect it. Reconnect from the tool. More causes are listed in automation not working.
Should you ever switch back?
You can return to a personal account from the same Account type and tools menu. You'd lose professional features — insights, contact buttons — and any connected automation would stop working. For anyone using Instagram to get customers, staying professional is almost always the right call.
