How to Sell on Instagram Without a Website (DMs + UPI)
Run a DM shop on Instagram with no website: automate price replies, take orders, accept UPI, payment links or COD, and hand off to WhatsApp to close the sale.
Plenty of Indian businesses sell entirely from Instagram — home bakers in Indore, saree sellers in Surat, thrift stores in Delhi, candle makers in Kochi — with no website at all. The shop is the Instagram profile, the checkout is a DM, and payment is a UPI ID or a payment link. It works. It just gets messy once orders pick up.
This is a practical guide to running that “DM shop” properly: the order flow, what to automate, what to keep human, and when it's finally time for a website.
The DM-commerce flow, end to end
- Discovery: a reel or post shows the product.
- Interest: they comment “price?” or a keyword, or DM you directly.
- Details: they get price, sizes or variants, delivery time and charges.
- Order: they confirm what they want and share an address.
- Payment: UPI, a payment link, or COD.
- Confirmation and dispatch: order summary, tracking, and a thank-you.
Steps 2 and 3 are the same for every customer and happen at all hours. That's where automation earns its keep. Steps 4 to 6 involve money and addresses, and usually work better with a person — or on WhatsApp.
Automate the repetitive part: price and details
The biggest leak in a DM shop is the gap between “price?” and your reply. If someone comments at 11 PM and you answer at 10 AM, they've moved on. Set up comment-to-DM automation on product reels so the price arrives in seconds:
Hi! 😊 This is our hand-painted Kalamkari dupatta.
Price: ₹1,450 · Free shipping across India · Delivery in 5–7 days
[Button: Order this] [Button: See more colours]
Use a keyword like PRICE plus its variants (“rate”, “kitne ka”), or an “any comment” trigger on reels where every comment is a buying question. JaldiDM's Smart Matching also catches the keyword inside sentences like “what is the price of this”.
You can also send a product card — image, name, price and a button — instead of plain text, which looks closer to a real shop listing.
The order step: collect only what you need
When they tap “Order this”, the next message can ask for the basics:
Lovely choice! To place your order, please share your WhatsApp number 📱 — we'll confirm the colour, take your address and send the payment details there.
The number is saved with their Instagram username in JaldiDM's Leads list, so nothing gets lost in a busy inbox. Ask for it with a clear reason, as covered in collecting phone numbers ethically.
Taking payment without a website
Option 1: UPI ID or QR
The simplest. Share your UPI ID or QR, the customer pays, sends a screenshot, and you match it with the order. Works well at low volume. The weak spots: matching screenshots to orders, and fake “payment done” screenshots — always check your bank or UPI app before dispatching.
Option 2: Payment links
Most payment providers let you create a payment link for a fixed amount and share it in chat. The customer pays by UPI, card or netbanking, and you get a clear record of who paid what. Better for higher-value orders and fewer “did you receive it?” messages.
Option 3: Cash on delivery
Many buyers in smaller cities prefer COD. It increases orders but also returns. A common middle ground: a small advance by UPI to confirm a COD order.
Whatever you choose, don't automate the payment step blindly. Prices, discounts, shipping charges and stock change. A human should confirm the final amount before sending a payment request.
The WhatsApp hand-off
Many DM sellers move the conversation to WhatsApp once someone is ready to order. It's familiar, it's easier to share addresses and payment screenshots there, and you can send dispatch updates later. Make the hand-off a button in the DM rather than asking people to save your number:
Ready to order? Tap below to chat with us on WhatsApp — we'll take it from there 🙌
[Button: Order on WhatsApp]
A WhatsApp click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message (“Hi, I want to order the Kalamkari dupatta”) saves the customer from typing and tells you instantly what they want. JaldiDM's Track Your Links will show you how many people tapped it.
What to keep human
- Custom requests: “Can you make it in maroon?”, “Bulk order for 40 return gifts?”
- Bargaining: “Thoda kam karo” deserves a person, not a bot.
- Delivery problems, damaged items, refunds. Always a human, always fast.
- Final order confirmation before payment.
A shared inbox helps here: the comment, your automated reply and the DM conversation sit in one thread, so whoever picks it up sees the full context.
Habits that build trust when there's no website
Without a website, buyers lean harder on signals inside Instagram:
- Show prices openly somewhere — at least a range. Why that matters is in the “price in DM” debate.
- Keep a Highlights row for reviews, delivery videos and “how to order”.
- Share dispatch videos and real customer photos (with permission).
- Put your return and exchange policy in a Highlight and in the order DM.
- Reply to every complaint publicly and politely, then move it to DM.
When you actually need a website
A DM shop scales further than people think, especially with automation handling the first reply. But consider a website (or a simple store builder) when you have dozens of SKUs with sizes and stock to track, when you want to run ads to a checkout page, or when matching payments to orders by hand starts eating your evenings. Until then, Instagram + DMs + UPI is a perfectly good business. For e-commerce-specific flows, see Instagram automation for e-commerce.
